Jan Brooke: examples of EIA preparation, review and training

At International Level

As course tutor for the Environmental Management module on the International Harbour Masters’ Diploma course Jan has been responsible for the development of training materials and for web-based mentoring of trainees since 2012. In this role, she sets and marks assignments on Environmental Impact Assessment.

Jan was the Environmental Impact Assessment trainer on the international Marina Designer Training Programme run by the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure (PIANC) in Rome, Italy in 2013.

In the UK

Jan’s recent experience includes undertaking an environmental assessment for the dredging of Brighton Marina (2014); providing expert advice to the Harbour Master on EIA and related requirements associated with dredging and disposal for the major Liverpool container port development (2010 - date); and advising the Bristol Port Company on EIA and the EU Habitats Directive for their container port development (2009).

In 2008, Jan was responsible for undertaking an EIA, including managing sub-consultant input and preparing an Environmental Statement for a proposed 260 berth marina development in Southampton Water; and she also provided advice on the potential environmental impacts of dredging and disposal to the Port of Tilbury (2006 to 2008).

Much of Jan’s background experience in EIA was amassed in her earlier role as manager of Posford Duvivier Environment (now part of Royal Haskoning DHV). In this capacity Jan was project director or project manager for numerous environmental impacts assessments and similar studies, including those for large scale coastal and flood risk management schemes, and for major ports and dredging projects.
